After Rene communicated with her business partner, there was little else to do but wait.

The yacht itself was filled with expensive luxuries that spanned many of the known planets, but none of them were useful. Our meal ration packets had been supplied from my own ship, but the yacht’s water reclamation filters were low, as well.

At least we had a steady supply of atmosphere on the yacht, and if worse came to worse, we could board my ship and head back to Station Four. It would be a hungry trip, but neither one of us would expire.

Meanwhile, I was bored.

I paced across the length of the cockpit, looking at the console for incoming messages. It remained silent.

“How reliable is this woman?” I asked.

Rene sent me a scowl. “I would trust her with my life.”

“You may very well be trusting her with your life,” I muttered. But even I knew I was being overdramatic. If Syd did not locate Acan before we were forced to abandon the yacht… Well, Rene would still have her scavenging operation to fall back on. I would have to start anew with my hunt. Although the likelihood of coming out across a choice bounty with a ten million credit payout was low indeed.

Also, if too much time had passed, there was every chance that Landri would retract his offer or up the price to buy into the guild.

None of these thoughts were comforting. I found my restless pacing increasing.

“You look like you have a bee in your bonnet,” Rene commented.

Confused, I looked at her. “Is that an Earth saying that I should know about?”

“Something like that. What’s wrong?”

“I dislike waiting. I dislike relying on the skills of people I do not personally know even more.”

I fully expected Rene to balk at that. After all, I had indirectly criticized her friend. However, she surprised me yet again, cocking her head to the side as if considering. “Yeah, I get that. If the situation were reversed, I’d be walking around like I had ants in my pants, too.”

“Ants in my… What?”

“Never mind,” she grinned.

I let out a long, frustrated sigh. “Waiting for my prey is not new to me,” I confessed. “But normally, I use my time to prepare for the encounter.”

“So, how would you prepare?” she asked.

I shook my head, frustrated. “There is no way to know what will be needed until your friend gets back to us. We are both fully healed, fed, and watered. We have no more access to weapons…” I trailed off and glanced at her, frowning. “Although you would be best served by learning how to fight properly.”

“Excuse you, I brought Acan down just fine.”

“Yes,” I said, amused. “By throwing yourself at him. But, if you remember, he was gaining the upper hand. You are inexperienced in hand-to-hand combat.”

“Not my fault,” she sniffed. “I was a freakin’ accountant back on my home planet. And now I’m a space scavenger. I haven’t had time to learn alien Kung Fu.”

“Your words are odd,” I decided.
